When I first heard “High Road” by Broken Bells, I was taken. Love the song and immediately bought the album on its release. I am a huge fan of The Shins so it isn’t surprising that I would like Broken Bells which features James Mercer, the lead singer for The Shins. It also features Brian Burton who some might know as Danger Mouse.

I jumped at the chance to get tickets to their show in Vancouver and was thrilled that they were playing at the Commodore. Such a great venue to really get a chance to see any band up close and personal.

Broken Bells

Broken Bells did not disappoint. With a big band backing both James and Brian (a total of 7), they played through most of the album with the addition of a few covers.

Brian on keyboard and James singing.

Has to be said, although I loved the show, I wish there had been some more audience interaction. A little more engagement from the band to really draw me in. That would have taken the show, for me, from being great to amazing!

GM Place, John Mayer, live concerts, Music, Vancouver

I am a lucky girl. Not only was I invited by my friend Sarah to see John Mayer but we got the most ridiculous seats. Row 18 on the floor. Dead centre.

John Mayer is an amazing performer. Not only can he kill it on the guitar but he can sing and his banter with the audience is part of the experience. And he isn`t hard to look at either so watching him for two hours is really not a bad thing!

Some highlights for me were Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, his cover of Don`t Stop Believing, Who Says and Vultures.

Set List:

Heartbreak Warfare
Good Love is On the Way
Vultures
Perfectly Lonely
Slow Dancing in a Burning Room
Assassin
Waiting on the World to Change
(New Song)
All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye
No Such Thing
Neon
Ain’t No Sunshine
Why Georgia
Half of My Heart > Don’t Stop Believing

Encore:

Who Says
Gravity

I loved how the audience brought John back for the encore. Rather than just screaming and clapping, we sung him back to the stage. Very cool! Overall, a great night out with a great friend listening to an amazing musician and singer.

Music can change the world, because it can change people

Music, Wakey!Wakey!

What can I say about how music and how it is such a big part of my life. There is nothing I love more than listening to an amazing band or an amazing song and getting lost. Or going to see a show and being blown away by a performance. If I am sad or angry, music can soothe my pain. It can put me back together. I was reminded today about how one song can move me.

Brooklyn by Wakey!Wakey http://thefamilyrecords.com/music/?albums_id=43

Listen and enjoy!

Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness.
