Marathon, Royal Victoria Marathon, Running, training, Victoria

I am now into my 10th week of my marathon training program and really loving my runs. I have found a great new running group whom I met through kickboxing. They also enjoy an early morning 7am start and prefer to run on Saturdays in the summer so we can enjoy our Saturday nights!

I have also and not surprisingly gotten my first training injury. I had been having some pains in my lower leg above the ankle. I went to my doctor and was diagnosed with a classic overuse injury and was told to rest. So what do i do? I run 26km on Saturday. Well, I have never been good at taking direction or sitting still. I am going to rest this week and not do the 19km run this coming weekend though. Hopefully that will do the trick along with icing and the anti-inflammatories I was prescribed. Seems like my body just can’t do all of those extra kilometres without having something go wrong. The good news is my IT band which is what gave me problems the last marathon seems to be just fine!

I am looking forward to the next weeks of training as we really start to get in to the higher km’s. I feel like the race is just around the corner. I guess it kind of is…10 weeks to go!!

After I ran the BMO Marathon in May 2007, I broke up with running. I didn’t even want to think about running ever again. The pain my body went through really just took me in a different direction until this year when a friend asked me to go for a run with her. I really didn’t want to go but I said I would and told her she would have to run slow with me because I hadn’t been for a run for almost a year. Once we got out there something happened. I wasn’t winded like I thought I was going to be. Apparently, kickboxing prepares you really well for running. I had a great run that night and it motivated me once again to get back out there and enjoy this city as a runner. Some days I am amazed by the beauty that surrounds us.

I have signed up for some races again. I am running a half marathon on June 28th and I am going to run the Victoria marathon in October. I am looking forward to the training as crazy as that might seem. I am travelling to Europe near the end of my training so I will be running in London, Paris and Edinburgh. What a great way to explore the city. I am so excited to get out there and see what I might discover.

I really never thought I would say this but I am glad running and I got back together. It wasn’t a good break up but some time apart and some healing needed to happen for us to find that love again.

Kickboxing…My Happy Place.

Picture me with boxing gloves and shin guards on facing the eyes of a guy who is about to come at me with kicks and punches. My eyes wide with the look of fear. Looking around the room, for someone who understands. Anyone? Bueller? I catch the eye of a smiling face and start to laugh. This is what kickboxing has become to me. A place of laughter, a place of comraderie and as a bonus, a place to get fit.

I started kickboxing eight months ago thinking it was just going to be a switch from my regular boring gym routine. But found friends, support and fun! We go through these crazy ass hour long workouts where you arms and/or legs are burning so badly you can hardly go on but there is always someone there, telling you not to give up, that you can do it, that its almost over, and to give it your all for that last little bit. These people really have become friends. People you can count on to get you through it. And although the classes are intense, I can’t even count the number of times that I have laughed so hard that I could barely continue.

So yes I have to face some guys who seriously think they are going to be the next GSP but in between those moments of panic, are moments I relish and I walk away each and every time with a smile on my face.

Kickboxing really has become my happy place. Who knew?
